It is a system used to support depth of excavation (earth retaining system). This system is widely used all over the world for more than 100 years. It uses wood and steel sections to support depth of excavation and can be used alone if the depth of excavation is relatively small, but if the depth of excavation is big, additional earth retaining system is required to support the Berlin wall such as anchors.
